Step 2: PAN Registration for the NGO
Your NGO must have a PAN card in its own name (not the founder’s personal PAN). The DARPAN portal uses PAN for identification and the number must match across all government databases.
Step 3: DARPAN Registration — Get Unique Darpan ID

Step 4A: FCRA Registration (for Foreign Funding)
If your NGO expects donations from foreign individuals, institutions, or governments, FCRA registration with the Ministry of Home Affairs is mandatory. FCRA requires: (a) Unique Darpan ID, (b) 12A registration from Income Tax, (c) dedicated FCRA bank account with SBI New Delhi Main Branch, and (d) at least 3 years of charitable operations. FCRA Form FC-3A is filed online on the MHA portal.
Step 4B: CSR-1 Filing (for Corporate CSR Funds)
If your NGO wants to receive CSR contributions from Indian companies, it must register on the MCA portal using Form CSR-1. Form CSR-1 requires a valid Darpan ID. Once CSR-1 is registered, your NGO appears in the MCA’s database of CSR-eligible organisations — visible to corporate CSR committees across India.
Step 5: 12A and 80G Registration (for Tax Benefits)
Separately, your NGO should obtain 12A (income tax exemption) and 80G (donor tax deduction) registration from the Income Tax Department. These are independent of DARPAN but work in conjunction — 80G makes your NGO more attractive to individual and corporate donors across India.

6 Mistakes That Cause DARPAN Registration Rejection in India
- 1. NGO name mismatch between registration certificate and PAN. If your trust deed or society certificate shows a slightly different name than your PAN card — even a single word difference — the portal administrator will reject your profile. - 2. Illegible or low-resolution Aadhaar card scans. The most common rejection reason on ngodarpan.gov.in. Aadhaar cards must be scanned at 300 DPI, clearly legible, and uploaded in PDF. Mobile photos of Aadhaar cards are routinely rejected.
